9/11: A Day of Remembrance and Reflection
The events of September 11, 2001, forever changed the course of American history.
On that tragic day, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
The attacks claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 innocent people from over 90 countries and left countless others injured and traumatized. In the aftermath of the attacks, the United States launched the War on Terror, which has had a profound impact on global politics and security.
Today, 20 years after the 9/11 attacks, we remember the victims and their families. We honor the first responders and volunteers who risked their lives to save others. And we recommit ourselves to fighting terrorism and protecting our nation from future attacks.
The 9/11 attacks were a tragedy, but they also brought out the best in us. In the face of adversity, Americans came together and showed the world our resilience and determination. We will never forget the victims of 9/11, and we will continue to honor their memory by living our lives to the fullest and by working to create a better world for all.
