Klobuchar, Colleagues Introduce Legislation to Protect Freedom to Vote, Strengthen Democracy

Freedom to Vote Act Sets Basic National Standards for Elections

All Americans to Cast Ballots in Preferred Manner, Regardless of Location

U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and several Democratic colleagues in the Senate have introduced the Freedom to Vote Act, a compromise piece of legislation that aims to protect the freedom to vote and strengthen American democracy. The bill establishes basic national standards to ensure that all Americans can cast their ballots in the way that works best for them, regardless of their zip code.

On September 14, 2021, Senator Klobuchar introduced S. 2747, the Freedom to Vote Act. On October 20, 2021, the Senate failed to invoke cloture on the motion to proceed to the bill's consideration, effectively blocking the legislation.

The Freedom to Vote Act addresses various aspects of election administration, including:

*
  • Expanding access to early voting and mail-in voting
  • *
  • Making voter registration easier and more accessible
  • *
  • Preventing voter suppression and intimidation
  • *
  • Improving the accuracy and transparency of elections
  • "Every American should have the right to vote," said Senator Klobuchar. "The Freedom to Vote Act sets basic national standards to make sure that all Americans can cast their ballots in the way that works best for them, regardless of what zip code they live in. I will continue to fight for this legislation so that every American has the opportunity to make their voices heard."
