Brisbane Lions Premiership Midfield Coach Signs

Danny Webster says

Brisbane Lions AFLW premiership-winning midfield coach Daniel Webster informed the Brisbane Lions club that he accepted a fresh coaching role with Hawthorn. His departure comes as a blow to Brisbane, but Webster sought new opportunities after five successful seasons at the Lions.

Webster led the Lions to their first AFLW premiership in 2021 and has helped develop some of the competition's leading midfielders, including AFLW Best and Fairest winner Emily Bates.

In a statement released by the Lions, Webster thanked the club for the opportunity to coach the team. He said, “I am extremely grateful for my time at the Lions. The club has been fantastic to me, and I have made some lifelong friends here. I wish the club all the best in the future.”

Lions coach Chris Fagan said he was disappointed to see Webster leave but understands his decision to seek a new challenge.

“Daniel has been an outstanding coach for us, and he will be a valuable addition to Hawthorn. We wish him all the best in his new role,” Fagan said.

Webster's departure leaves a big hole in the Lions' coaching ranks, but Fagan is confident he can find a suitable replacement.

“We have a number of talented coaches within our system, and we are confident we can find someone who can step into Daniel's shoes,” Fagan said.

The Lions start their 2023 AFLW season on August 26 against the Western Bulldogs.
