The World Record Progression in the Men's 3000 Metres Steeplechase

A Historical Overview

The 3000 metres steeplechase, also known as the 3000m SC, is a track and field event that involves running a distance of 3000 metres (1.86 miles) with 28 barriers to hurdle and seven water jumps along the way. It is one of the most demanding events in athletics, requiring a combination of speed, endurance, and jumping ability.

The Early Years

The first steeplechase race was held in England in the 1850s. The event quickly gained popularity, and the first world record was set in 1875 by British runner Charles Bennett, with a time of 10:35.2.
