Thousands Displaced One Dead As Water Levels Continue To Rise

Sea Level Rise: A Growing Threat

Ocean levels are on the rise, and it’s only going to get worse.

The planet is warming rapidly, resulting in historic drought, deadly floods, and unusual melting events in the Arctic.

We know the factors that play a role in sea level rise:

  • Melting glaciers and ice sheets add water to the seas
  • Warmer temperatures cause water to expand

As the seas rise, coastlines vanish, territories are lost, and resources become increasingly scarce.

How Much Sea Level Rise Can We Expect?

By 2100, we could see as little as 8 inches of additional sea level rise or over 6 feet—based partly on how much we continue to pollute the planet.

What Are the Consequences of Sea Level Rise?

The consequences of sea level rise are far-reaching and devastating:

  • Coastal flooding and erosion
  • Loss of land and infrastructure
  • Displacement of populations
  • Increased risk of storms and other extreme weather events
  • Damage to ecosystems and food supplies

In 2011, it was estimated that up to 187 million people could be forced to flee their homes due to rising sea levels by 2100.

What Can We Do to Address Sea Level Rise?

There is no easy solution to sea level rise, but there are steps we can take to mitigate its effects:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • Invest in renewable energy sources
  • Improve coastal resilience
  • Develop early warning systems
  • Educate the public about the risks of sea level rise

By taking action now, we can help to protect our communities and our planet from the devastating impacts of sea level rise.
