The Origins of the Penguin Comic Con

The Penguin Comic Con began in 2008 as a small gathering of comic book enthusiasts in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The convention was founded by Rich and Dawn Bruner, owners of Brave New World Comics. The event was originally held at the Doubletree Hotel in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. And it attracted around 600 attendees. Over the years, the convention has grown in size and popularity. In 2019, the event was held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh. And it attracted over 30,000 attendees.

Becoming a Non-Profit Organization

In 2011, the Penguin Comic Con became a non-profit organization. As a non-profit, the convention is able to donate a portion of its proceeds to local charities. Over the years, the Penguin Comic Con has donated over $100,000 to local charities. Some of the charities that the convention has donated to include Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, and the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council.

Notable Guests

The Penguin Comic Con has hosted a number of notable guests over the years. Some of the biggest names to appear at the convention include Stan Lee, Neil Gaiman, and George R. R. Martin. The convention has also hosted a number of popular actors, including William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, and Jason Momoa.

Awards

The Penguin Comic Con has received a number of awards over the years. In 2015, the convention was named one of the "Top 10 Comic Conventions in the United States" by Comic-Con International. In 2016, the convention was awarded the "Best Comic Convention in Pennsylvania" by the Pennsylvania Comic Book Association.
